Glenda Knarian just completed a short term missionary assignment in Pass Christian, Mississippi through First Church of God in Allegan, MI.
I spent a lot of time that week in Mississippi wondering how those people could be so cheerful, hopeful and grateful to those who came to help. All these months after Katrina and still very few signs of getting back to their normal lives.
I met a man the last day of the mission in the ruins of a hotel near God's Katrina Kitchen. He told me that he had stayed in his rental home a few miles inland during the hurricane. As the water was rising in the house he climbed to the attic and prayed to God to save him. All of a sudden the wind blew the roof off the house and next thing he knew he was standing on dry land a block away.
He said, "I only have a 7th grade education, I'm living in a pop up camper and I haven't worked since before the hurricane, but I don't worry because I know that God has a plan for me or he wouldn't have saved me."
I think that God sent that man to show me that with faith comes hope. Maybe God caused this disaster to bring us closer to Him and to each other. I'm ready to go back and I encourage anyone who is able, to go. It's a great experience - one you will never forget!
