Church members volunteer
Earlier this year, Pastor Don Hendrick asked his congregation members at Allegan First Church of God how and what they would like to do to make a difference in the community. Small groups were developed, and after discussion action steps were taken.
One small group wanted to go to area nursing facilities and brighten the lives of the residents. Joan Rininger, Ken and Joyce Strand, Lenora Griffin, Nancy Gwilliams, Pastor Hendrick, Sue Rider, Kathy Green, Jan Batey, Lillian Pranshka and Tammy Rasmussen alternate their monthly visits to Metron of Allegan and Allegan County Medical Care facilities.
'I enjoy seeing the smiles and being a part of the resident's life,' Griffin said. 'Many of the residents have lost their family and loved ones and we are the only non professionals to visit.'
Sometimes the visit consists of walking outside or praying, but mostly it's just talking or listening. The group invites other community members to join them on their visits.
'Our facility couldn't provide the level of services and activities without our valuable volunteers. They are a real asset to the staff and residents,' said Bill Hekker, administrator for the Medical Care facility. 'We have many volunteers and welcome more to join us.'
